WHAT SPECIFIC ELEMENTS PLAY INTO YOU GETTING INTO THE RIGHT HEADSPACE TO CREATE – MUSIC, LIGHT, TIME OF DAY, ETC?
I'm a morning person. I have my cup of coffee, listen to some music or a podcast. It feels like a clean slate and I'm always the most productive. My mind is clear and I feel the most optimistic.
HOW DOES THE ART COMMUNITY HERE IMPACT OR INSPIRE YOUR CREATIONS?
Toronto is full of creative people and I have a lot of friends in the art scene. Everyone loves to collaborate and work together. It's so great. We all support each other and we love to bounce ideas off each other. There's a lot of positive energy in the art community here so it's important we all represent this city!
ARE THERE ANY PEOPLE IN YOUR FIELD HERE THAT INSPIRE YOU IN YOUR WORK?
So many! This city is full of amazing artists. My list is very long... Here are just a few: Tessar lo, Rajni Perera, and Virgil Baruchel, Winnie Troung, and Kris Knight
OTHER THAN CREATING WORKS OF ART, WHAT ARE YOUR PASSIONS?
Music! It's always been a huge part of my life. My parents introduced me to all their music at an early age. I've inherited all my fathers records. I love Rock, MoTown, Pop, Electronic, Indie, Folk, House etc. Everything! I always wished I could play a musical instrument but unfortunately I can't seem to play anything. It's so sad! I work at the Danforth Music Hall as a bartender just so I can see shows. It's so great. It also introduces me to music I would never think to listen to. Music brings people together.
ANY TIPS FOR ASPIRING ARTISTS OUT THERE?
It’s important to make mistakes.
Make art for yourself.
Don’t be afraid to experiment.
Favourite, best-kept, hidden spot in Toronto?
Haha. This isn’t really hidden, but it's my secret spot. The Toronto Public library. I love going there when I want to be alone. I just look at books for hours. It's so peaceful.
Top 5 things that get you through the day?
1) Coffee 2) Music 3) Podcasts 4) Food 5) Being Creative
DO YOU EVER GO THROUGH PERIODS OF CREATIVE STAGNANCY? HOW DO YOU COMBAT IT?
Yes. All the time! That's why I work in different mediums. When I'm stuck on a painting and I've lost inspiration, I start working on my digital art. It keeps everything fresh. I also sometimes just put the paint brush down and go outside. Getting my mind off work can be important because the pressure can paralyze me.
WHERE IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU LIKE TO EXPLORE?
Wow. Can I say everywhere? I haven't done enough travelling. Asia, Africa, South America, India...
